WASHINGTON: US Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell on Tuesday blamed the group Lashkar-e-Taiba for the deadly attacks attacks in
Mumbai.
"The same group that we believe is responsible for Mumbai had a similar attack in 2006 attack on a train and killed a similar number of people," said McConnell, speaking at Harvard University. "Go back to 2001 and it was an attack on the parliament."
McConnell did not mention Lashkar-e-Taiba by name, but the group has fought Indian rule in divided Kashmir and was blamed for the 2001 attack on the Indian parliament.

Dear Friends, I`m producing below an extract from an article named The Honest Truth by Ajit Dayal of Quantam MF.
Marginalise the politicians, not the political process
You don’t want the rule of the army.
You want a democracy.
So you must not change the political process of elections, but you can change who stands for elections.
There have been many suggestions made by others that sound pretty good:
1) remove all security cover given to every politician - then truly those who wish to serve India will be counted;
2) your state of origin has no meaning in India or in any election speech and if that is the platform of any party, they should be barred from the electoral process - the NSG commandoes and the Marine Corps did not check the id cards of the people they saved to see if they were Maharshtrians, Gujaratis, of foreigners. They went about the job of saving people at the cost of their lives;
3) politicians cannot visit the site of any terrorist attack - unless they are willing to go unarmed and unescorted to meet the terrorists while they are still alive and well armed.
4) every major metro city must have a NSG-type force of 400 people; this will improve the response time for any future terrorist attack. And these units should not be in control of the state politicians - they report directly to head of the NSG, who reports to the head of the army.
5) the 6 Australian commandos on vacation - with no weapons - who rescued 150 people from the Taj Rooftop showed us what a well-prepared local force can do; time to get training from the Israelis, Australians, UK, and US commando units. And if any political party does not like it, send them on a boat ride to Karachi. Equip the boat with a GPS to ensure they reach Karachi.
Thanks
Ashal

Take away the rich financial rewards, security provided to family members and the power over uneducated masses, very few of us will enter this business of politics. It is one of the most thankless job any one can take as a profession. Do not begrudge the perks available on the job for so little education or hardwork. It certainly is no rocket science or brain surgery....

Kasab says his father sent him to LeT

MUMBAI: Captured terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Mohammad Amir Kasab has told the police that his father asked him to join the Lashkar-e-Taiba so that he could use the money they gave him to run the family.
The 21-year-old has told the police that his father, Amir, introduced him to an LeT commander two years ago. "Kasab used to call the man chacha (uncle). Chacha was the handler of a group of 25 youths, including Kasab, who were provided special terror training. In return, chacha used to pay his father," said an officer who is part of the investigations into the attack on Mumbai.
A resident of Faridkot in Chipaalpura taluka of Ukhad zilla in Punjab (Pakistan), Kasab hails from a poor family and himself worked as a labourer before joining the LeT. His two younger sisters and parents stay in Pakistan, the police said.
According to Kasab, his father was aware of chacha`s links with LeT. He says they were indoctrinated by chacha (see box) to create mayhem in India.
Out of the group of 25 trained LeT terrorists, 10 were handpicked for the Mumbai operation. "Around 45 days before the terror strike, chacha called the 10 youths and briefed them about the mission," said the official.
The militant training, Kasab told interrogators, began a year ago and camps were held in the jungles of Afghanistan and Pakistan. "In their training camps, the role of each module was specified. They were not allowed to interact with each other," said the officer.
Kasab told investigators they were given blueprints of all the four targets - Taj Hotel, Oberoi Hotel, Trident Hotel and Nariman House. They also received training in swimming and sailing, besides the use of high-end weapons and explosives.
Now that Kasab has been captured alive, he fears the worst for his family as chacha had given strict instructions that they should not return alive at any cost.
Kasab has told the police that he didn`t know driving. His associate Abu Ismail Dera Ismail Khan, 25, drove the Skoda car they used for the get-away after the police vehicle they seized after killing ATS chief Hemant Karkare broke down.
When their Skoda neared Girgaum chowpatty, they ran into a police barricade. Ismail Khan succumbed in the ensuing exchange of fire and Kasab got injured in the hand. He was taken to Nair Hospital where he has been kept under heavy police protection.
Indoctrination programme
During training, the suspected terrorists were told that Mohammed Afzal alias Afzal Guru, convicted for his involvement in the December 2001 Parliament attack, had been hanged to death in India. Afzal Guru, an LeT operative, was sentenced to death in 2004, but his execution has been stayed pending a clemency plea. He is currently in Tihar jail. The indoctrination also used the controversial cartoons of Prophet Mohammed published in a Danish newspaper.

Twenty-one-year-old Mohammed Akmal Kasab, the lone terrorist nabbed alive, is begging to be killed. “Please kill me. I do not want to be alive”, he reportedly told his captors — the Mumbai cops.
He is not doing this to atone for his heinous crime or out of sheer religious fervour. A lot more is at stake for him and his family back home in Faridkot, Pakistan. A senior investigating official told DNA that Kasab’s bosses in the Lashkar-e-Tayiba had promised to pay a sum of Pakistani Rs1.5 lakh (equivalent to Indian Rs96,000) to his family if he died.
The official said that the senior members were promised Pakistani Rs2 lakh. Sources claimed that also brainwashed that he would get a place in jannat (heaven) if he died for jihad.
However, Kasab is now worried that his masters won’t pay his poor family and is also concerned about their welfare.“Please kill me. I have nothing to live for. I could not go to jannat and my family will not get the cash,” he kept repeating to the police.

Wearing lipstick and lighting candles is not our culture.
Women have to eat Paan to make their lips red... Powder is not indian culture... shall i write the treatise from Hinduism which tells how hindu women decked of yore.. You want women to eat paan to make their lips red and have stinking mouths when such lovely shades of Loreal lipstick is available... there is nothing in a brandname becoz its American... if this is the attitude of Indian Hindus the whole society with its narrowminded thinking will have hemophilia....do u know hemophilia came from a result of narrowminde thinking of Royalty....
Whats wrong with western wear? They look smart.. u want women to wet their hair and tie that hideuos knot at the end and go DING DING DING?? and wear mehendi and stuff....ur setting standards for women`s fashion.
We love the way western women dress and the fashion they thought us... that does not mean we dont like indian attire.
If men like u take over BJP we women will be forced to wear gunghat... Shudder...
Horrendous.
The only reason hindus dont burn candles is becoz it has animal fat in it i guess... but there is nothing like this is our culture that is our culture in hinduism... the moment someone says this they are not hindus....

Radhikadevi, personally I do not find anything objectionable with what Naqvi said. For this you may call me mcp which I know I am not.
If you go thru type of people who were on that march, you will find that they are from hi-fi society who go on picnic during election days to take advantage of long holidays. And the same people say "politician murdabad". First vote & then talk this.
About lipstick, powder and all - it is not indian culture. In earlier days it was a practice to chew paan & make lips red. But this was only for pros & strictly forbidden for ladies.
Burning candlelights - also not in indian culture. We burn "niranjan", incense etc.
He said why are they shouting "politician murdabad". they should shout "pakistan murdabad". What is wrong with that ?
He said the terrorists aim is to derail democratic process. He further says by shouting "politician murdabad" , these people are achieving same thing which terrorists want. Is it not correct ?
Politicians are here to stay in a democracy - some of them will corrupt, some goondas, some rapists, some all & very few honest. The job of the people is to chose right kind of people & not picnicing during election. If these lipstick-powder women know this, democracy will win India.

Army and police have definite duties to perform which they could not perform because of political interference and the army is diverted to provide protection to ministers and other political VVIPs This should be stopped forthwith Only in rare cases police /army protection can be given where there exists genuine threats Parliament votes and allocate funds for purchase of mordern weapons and other accessaries so as to discharge their duties efficiently Out dated arms ,in this digital scenario is useless Most of the funds are siphoned by the politicians and only a portion is spent on purchases of arms and consequently our army is illequiped to meet any contingency. This type of corruption exists in all types of govt. purchases and goes on unchecked Thus the integrity and sovernity of our nation is compromised This should stop Our army and police forces should be well equipped with the latest weaponary and our security forces motivated to do their duties bravely with out any political interference politicians who fear their lives and thus need security protection should be asked to have their own arrangements the efficency of army personnel will be decreased if they are assigned VVIPs security duties Not only that these personnel will in course of time become corrupt as their political masters This is a dangerous side effect
There are a good number of suggestions coming in this forum and an earnest effort should be taken to consider viable suggestions for implementation High priority should be give to protect our country and provide safeguard the lives of common people We cannot afford to neglect our armed and police forces and if we do it as before, we do it to our peril...

People at risk but hundreds of crores to protect netas
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: While they seem unable to protect ordinary people from terrorist attacks, politicians, cutting across party lines, spend hundreds of crores of tax-payers` money to protect themselves. Some of them may be at genuine risk, but there are numerous politicians who surround themselves with gun-toting commandos to flaunt their `status` and end up harassing ordinary people by blocking traffic and pushing vehicles off the road.
Over Rs 250 crore is spent on VIP protection — including VIPs like Deve Gowda, Amar Singh, Ram Vilas Paswan, Sajjan Kumar, B L Joshi, R L Bhatia, Sharad Yadav, Rameshwar Thakur, E Ahmad, Murli Manohar Joshi, Brij Bhushan Sharan and Pramod Tiwari. Most of these worthies are said to be facing little real risk. It`s also questionable whether lakhs of rupees should be spent on the protection of some others, like Sajjan Kumar, who have murder cases against them.
The explosion of VIP security has led to a ridiculous situation in which commandos meant for anti-terror operations have been diverted to protect politicians. The NSG, set up in 1984 for anti-hijack and anti-terror operations, has two wings--the Special Action Group (SAG), comprising army personnel on deputation, and the Special Rangers Group (SRG), comprising personnel from the ITBP, CISF, CRPF, BSF and SSB. More than half of SRG has been diverted to VIP security.
This is in addition to the Special Protection Group (SPG) that is exclusively meant for providing security to the PM, former PMs and members of the Gandhi family. Interestingly, the SPG budget for 2008-09 is Rs 180 crore, up from Rs 117 crore the previous year, while the 2008-09 budget for NSG, which is meant to protect over a billion people from terror, is Rs 158 crore, down from Rs 159 crore crore the previous year.
It`s not only the SPG and NSG that protect our netas. In addition to them, every state diverts a sizeable number of policemen for VIP security. In Delhi, where the number of self-important politicians is highest, as many as 14,200 policemen have been deployed on round-the-clock VIP security duty.
VIP security is broken up into five levels — SPG for those at the top of the heap, followed by the Z-plus, Z, Y and X categories. Z-plus security is provided by NSG `black cats` consisting of six personal security officers, two head constables, 12 constables, one escort and one pilot vehicle. Thirty politicians like L K Advani, Mayawati, Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa, Murli Manohar Joshi, Amar Singh and Paswan are provided this cover.
The pyramid gets wider at the lower level of security — 68 VIPs get Z category protection, 243 get Y category and 81 X category. Of course, all of them get to flash red lights on their cars and flaunt their status, generally viewed as a nuisance by the aam admi . So intrusive is their security that the Delhi high court was recently provoked into saying, ``Politicians are not national assets that need to be protected.``

GM to slash up to 31,500 jobs in US
CHICAGO: General Motors told lawmakers Tuesday that it plans to cut up to 31,500 more jobs in the United States, as it confronts a severe slump 100 years of GM that has it begging Congress for an $18 billion bailout.
GM said it planned to reduce its total US employment from the current level of 96,537 people to between 65,000 and 75,000 salaried and unionized workers by 2012.
The total number of US plants would be cut to 38 in 2012 from 47 in 2008.
GM has already slashed its workforce nearly in half from the 2000 levels of 191,465 people. The company operated 59 powertrain, stamping and assembly plants in the United States in 2000.
The job cuts were detailed in a report GM presented to Congress in hopes of securing government-backed, low-cost loans.
GM said it expects to be "fully competitive" with Toyota on wage costs for "both current workers and new hires" by 2012 due to "additional changes to be negotiated" with its main union, productivity improvements, turnover rates and the planned cuts.
A landmark labor agreement reached last year has lowered GM`s total costs for new workers to 25 to 35 dollars an hour compared with Toyota`s average US labor cost of between $45 and $50 per hour, GM said.
"The operating and capital restructuring elements will significantly improve the company`s profitability and cash flow for the long term, and enable full repayment of any temporary federal assistance by 2012" in the event US auto sales remain at or above 12 million vehicles a year, GM said in the plan.
GM forecast its labor costs for union workers in the United States would drop to 4.5 billion dollars a year in 2012 from 8.1 billion dollars in 2008 and 18.4 billion dollars in 2003.

And if any political party does not like it, send them on a boat ride to Karachi. Equip the boat with a GPS to ensure they reach Karachi.

Crisis prompts Credit Suisse, HSBC to axe bank jobs
The cuts are the latest in a wave of job losses in which around 90,000 jobs have been axed at major global banks since September. Of these, more than 50,000 were at US bank Citigroup

Zurich: Switzerland’s Credit Suisse AG and Britain’s HSBC Holdings Plc are axing hundreds of banking jobs as the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression continues to bite.
The cuts are the latest in a wave of job losses in which around 90,000 jobs have been axed at major global banks since September. Of these, more than 50,000 were at US bank Citigroup.
Credit Suisse said that the bank was cutting 650 jobs, equivalent to roughly 3% of its investment banking workforce of about 21,300.
“The cuts will be made mainly in investment banking,” a spokesman for the Swiss bank said.
The bank, which employed around 50,000 people globally at the end of September, has already slashed 1,800 jobs this year.
HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank, said it was cutting 500 jobs at its UK banking business following a review of the business. The bank employs 58,000 people in Britain.
“We deeply regret taking this step, but we consider it essential to ensure our business is operating as efficiently as possible and that we are best placed to deal with the economic downturn and maintain our levels of customer service,” HSBC’s UK Managing Director Paul Thurston said.
Shares in Credit Suisse were 1.8% lower at 0925 GMT and HSBC shares were down 3%, against a 1.85% fall in the DJ Stoxx European banking index.
Job Cull
Losses at Credit Suisse’s investment banking division dragged the Swiss bank into a loss in the third quarter and analysts expect the fourth quarter to be another difficult one.
Credit Suisse had already cut 500 jobs in investment banking in October. Direct competitor UBS, whose foray into risky US assets has cost it $49 billion in writedowns, announced in October it would get rid of nearly 2,000 jobs.
Credit Suisse’s spokesman did not comment on which specific jobs would be shed nor the time frame for the measures.
“However, usually these cuts are made very fast,” he said.
Other leading banks have had to shrink their workforce in the last quarter as the financial crisis deepened and major economies were predicted to fall into an economic recession.
Britain’s Barclays said in October it would lay off 3,000 people and may have to cut another 50 jobs, a source close to the bank said.
In Germany, Commerzbank announced in September 9,000 job cuts while rival Deutsche Bank is expected to axe 900 jobs, a source with knowledge of the plan said last month.

Demographics also have an impact on a country’s current account balance. Empirical evidence collected by IMF shows that the higher the ratio of prime savers in an economy, the lower the current account deficit. As the number of old people rises, both savings and investment should fall. But the empirical evidence shows that the impact on savings is more than that on investments. As a result, the ageing economy will run a current account deficit. And since that deficit will have to be financed, the younger economies will have to run a current account surplus. This offers a new reason for the pressure on the US current account deficit.
Fifty years from now, demographics alone could make our current account balance rise by 6% of the gross domestic product.
Of course, not all of these trends are due to demographics alone. As the report points out, “The actual impacts may turn out to be more limited. For instance, more fully integrated global capital markets could change the picture in coming decades: in particular, capital flows from younger economies in the region could help support asset demand and prices in rapidly ageing countries. Equally, firms in fast-ageing countries could diversify their operations toward faster-growing and younger economies to offset declines in their valuation. Moreover, other determinants of asset values, such as productivity gains and fiscal and monetary policy, may offset demographic influences.” And then, of course, there’s the all-important question of a country’s workers being able to find enough employment for the demographic magic to do its bit.
