Hi,
800 terror modules operating in India with external support
Tue, Aug 12 04:24 PM
Indian intelligence agencies have uncovered at least 800 terrorist cells in the country operating with "external support," and are now looking for the brains behind them within India, National Security adviser M K Narayanan has said.
"We are concerned that there is a great deal of external inspiration and support, we are also concerned and are looking at a mastermind within the country," Narayanan told Singapore's Straits Times in an interview in Kuala Lumpur, when asked about investigations into the blasts that rocked Bangalore and Ahmedabad on consecutive days.
Narayanan said intelligence agents had "disrupted" several modules, some of which are "not entirely foreign."
"Clearly, there is some kind of organisation. We have to find out if that organisation is localised or there is an external group or module operating," he said without elaborating.
He also expressed concern over the bombing of hospitals by terror outfits in Ahmedabad -- the first instance of a hospital being targeted by terrorists in India.
"Copycat systems are coming up," he said.
\"Like putting bombs in vehicles near hospitals soon after blasts, knowing that large congregations will be there and impact will be much greater,\" Narayanan said.

India: R&D Stronghold
Given its skyrocketing wages, tightening labor market, and worsening infrastructure bottlenecks, one might think India is starting to lose steam as an offshore research and development haven.
Not a chance. According to a study by Zinnov, a consulting firm that helps multinationals craft global product-development strategies, India\'s R&D scene is not only still gaining momentum, it\'s also becoming more strategically important. This is happening even though the average cost per employee rose 16.2% annually in the past three years.
Offshore R&D has mushroomed into a $9.35 billion annual industry, Zinnov reports, and is growing at a 23% annual clip. By 2012, the firm predicts, this business will reach $21.4 billion. The findings are based on interviews with senior managers of 120 India-based R&D centers of foreign companies.
The key drivers are multinationals. Roughly two-thirds of the work is done at R&D centers owned by tech giants such as Cisco (CSCO), Motorola (MOT), General Electric (GE), and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), as well as a growing number of small- and midsize U.S. companies. The number of such foreign-owned centers has surged from 180 in 2000 to 594 this year. ...

Oil Falls More Than as U.S. Currency Climbs Against the Euro
By Mark Shenk
Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell more than a barrel to a 14-week low as the dollar strengthened against the euro, weakening the appeal of commodities as an inflation hedge.
``There\\`s been an incredibly strong correlation between the dollar and the oil market recently,\\`\\` said Ric Navy, a broker at BNP Paribas SA in New York. ``A lot of money has been exiting the commodities because of the increasing strength of the dollar and I don\\`t see this ending any time soon.\\`\\`
Most energy and metals futures dropped as the dollar rose to a 5 1/2 month high versus the euro today. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he ordered a halt to a five-day offensive in Georgia, a country that connects the oil-rich Caspian Sea region with world markets.
Crude oil for September delivery fell .12, or 1 percent, to 3.33 a barrel at 11:53 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures touched 2.31 today, the lowest since May 2. Prices are up 59 percent from a year ago.
The dollar has rallied for six days against the euro on signs that the economic slowdown is spreading beyond the U.S. Germany\\`s economy, the largest in the 15-nation region that uses the euro, probably contracted in the second quarter for the first time in almost four years, according to the median forecast of 41 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.
The dollar rose 0.1 percent to .4901 per euro at 11:55 a.m. in New York, from .4909 yesterday. It touched .4816, the strongest since Feb. 26.
Brent crude oil for September settlement declined .16, or 1 percent, to 1.51 a barrel on London\\`s ICE Futures Europe exchange. Prices fell to 0.47 today, the lowest since May 2.

Grit and determination

For a man who could not even lift a rifle for almost a year let alone shoot with it, Abhinav Bindra\'s gold medal at the Beijing Olympics is more than just a historic feat -- it is a miraculous story of grit and determination.
The 25-year-old 10m air rifle world champion proved the naysayers wrong and lived upto the Olympic spirit of Citius, Altius, Fortius.
Indian shooters went to Beijing amid a lot of hype about their medal prospects but reality dawned as soon as they touched the Chinese capital.
One by one, celebrated names like Anjali Bhagwat, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, world title holder, and Mansher Singh misfired badly and failed to even qualify for the finals of their respective events.
It is against this background that one had to view Abhinav - one name that had hardly created a buzz before leaving for Beijing. With a spine injury hampering his preparations in the run up to the Games, he was at best given an outside chance.
However, the Khel Ratna and Arjuna awardee who is competing in his third successive Olympics, thrived on the relative anonymity and was happy to go about his job without too many expectations resting on his shoulders.
And if Abhinav\'s career track record is anything to go by, then he was always one of the best bets for an Olympic medal.
A gold medallist at the Manchester Commonwealth Games, Bindra became the first Indian to clinch an Olympic berth for Athens 2004 with a bronze medal at the Munich world Championships.
His Athens sojourn, however, was highly forgettable as faulty flooring in the finals deprived him of a slice of history at his second Olympic tryst.
However, an unfazed Bindra moved on and within two years of the Athens heartbreak he ensured a third Olympic appearance by winning the gold medal at the Zagreb World Championships, becoming the first Indian to do so.
But after the dream run, started a nightmare that threatened his career. A spine injury meant that even lifting a rifle was out of question and murmurs started as to whether the prodigious talent would ever be at his best.
However, Bindra returned to the shooting range after almost one year of a grueling rehab. Fitter and more determined, Bindra made sure that his third attempt at Olympic glory went perfectly by the script.
In a thriller of a contest that went right down to the last shot, Bindra beat off competition from a reigning Olympic champion en route to his historic feat which would be celebrated for a long time to come.
