In fact most MFs are waiting for the market to bottom out completely as market is still riding with some air of good growth. But as we see the actual slowdown, the growth will definitely be affected & GDP of 5 to 5.5% will be seen. Again IIP numbers could see negative times ahead. So Indian market has not factored its own slowdown & its dipping growth coming forward, it has just factored US recession & Europe\...

Most MFs likely to invest in largecaps: Valueresearch

Posted by : MMB Messenger

Dhirendra Kumar of Valueresearch the MF industry is still in a wait and watch mode and has hardly deployed any of the remaining cash. He believes most of the MFs when they do deploy their cash are likely to incline heavily towards large-caps as there’s little confidence in mid-caps.

Let us say you have made an asset allocation of 50% in debt and 50% in equity. Last 1 year let us say you have invested Rs 50,000 in debt and Rs 50,000 in equity. After 1 year your debt portion would have grown to say Rs 54000 ( @ net 8%) . Your equity portion has come down to Rs 36000. So your asset allocation has changed to 54:36 from 50:50
This year if you are investing 1 lakh - invest Rs 41,000 in debt and Rs 59000 in equity. Your asset allocation will come back To 50:50 ( 95000: 95000). In the future equity will perform better than debt. End of the year you might have to put more in debt to balance or even withdraw partly to make it 50:50. As long as you keep doing this every year you will make money in the long run. The main problem with people is that when equity does well they invest more and when it is not doing well like now, they run away or stop investing. If you overcome GREED and FEAR - you can be a successful investor. What one needs is DISCIPLINE & PATIENCE. You being a doctor , should find it easier. ...

What is PE...

that is true of Dow also or even sensex. one cannot passively invest and be clear enough to pluck the fruits when ripe. otherwise the returns from fd over a long period will be better (post tax). I would consider fd returns superior even to real estate investment if rent is ignored. if rent is considered there is the risk of loss of the property if he refuses to vacate.

Make money when the markets fall

Oh! I have doubts on Equity as asset class - Nikkei was around 35,000 in late 80s. The fall from there is continous and now after a couple of decades, it is struggling less than 10,000.

Anything fundamentally wrong in Japan?

Dear Dr Sundep,
The easiest way to book profits is to select dividend payout option. Let the fund manager decide when to book profit. Coming to your second question of what to do with profit booking. Well, the dividend declaration is at the highest when markets are on the rise and so is the NAV(You can see that all dividends in MF have almost dried up due to market decline). This will surely disturb your asset allocation. Invest the profits in the asset class that has come down to bring back your prefered asset allocation; i.e. buy more of debt, FD or gold from the profits to balance your portfolio.
Hope this will Help.
Regards,
Wadia...

Do you know what Nikkei`s valuation was when it had touched 35000. DO you know what the valuation is now? What was Japan`s economic situation in the 1990`s..What was the GDP growth of Japan in the same period. Is India in the same economic situation in terms of GDP growth and all.

Don`t just look at the index levels and decide what equity can and cannot do. ...

Hanging on to fundamentally sound equity investments and in fact buying more when the markets stink, is the best thing to do to get attractive returns.
