At a time when many companies are cutting down on their new recruits due to global slowdown, IT bellwether Infosys Technologies has decided to stick to its target of hiring 25,000 people in the current financial year.

\"We are planning to hire 25,000 people in the current fiscal and among them, 18,000 will be hired through campus recruitment,\" Infosys Senior Vice-President & Group Head of Human Resources Nandita Gurjar said.

Pointing out that the firm has not made any changes in hiring plans due to a global slowdown; she said the impact on hiring could be visible in the last two quarters of the current fiscal.

\"The third and fourth quarters will be the time when the firm tends to tighten up its hiring,\" she said.

Noting that the company would have liked more people to come in, Nandita Gurjar said the reason for lower numbers is not just economic slowdown but many other factors including infrastructure and business plans.

According to statistics provided by the firm, it had 3,372 trainees for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 whereas the same stood at 5,070 in the corresponding period a year ago.

On attrition rates, Nandita Gurjar said that the levels have come down in recent times and is hovering little over 13 per cent. As on the first quarter of this fiscal, the attrition was at 13.6 per cent, which is marginally lower than 13.7 per cent in the year-ago period.

The company had hired 35,000 people in 2007-08.

Infosys Wants to Make the Store a Web Page

NEW YORK--So much goes on inside a store that marketers don't know about. Sure, they know what products people purchase, but the physical retail environment just doesn't lend itself to measurable information about how much time people spend looking at a display, what products they considered buying but didn't, or which ones they simply ignored.

On the Web of course, that information is considerably easier to track.

We have attempted to make the store Web-like," Sandeep Dadlani, Infosys' global head of sales, marketing and innovation, told InternetNews. "By making the store aware, we are creating the Internet for the physical world."

Will Infosys dole out cash to investors?

You can call it a treasury company after all, as Infosys stack up piles of dollars the dilemma for the management is where to invest this money.

According to V Balakrishnan, CFO, Infosys Technologies, the company is looking out for acquisitions, and if it don't get attractive returns it will give back the cash to share holders.

So good news for the shareholders as they could look forward to some of that cash in form of fatter dividends or even buy backs, as valuations of IT firms are at mouthwatering levels in the current market.

Infosys expects banking growth

Local chief executive Gary Ebeyan expects business process outsourcing work to double in the next year, while core banking revenues could grow rapidly if the company succeeds in several bids.
"We have four BPO customers and we are probably in negotiation with another six or seven on top of that, and we expect that to increase," Mr Ebeyan said.

"The Finacle core banking platform will be explosive."

The National Australia Bank has shortlisted Infosys along with Oracle for its billion-dollar core systems overhaul, but Mr Ebeyan declined to comment on these discussions.

He also expects growth of between 20 and 30 per cent in its "bread and butter" enterprise application business, which includes application development and legacy application maintenance.

INTERVIEW-India's Infosys plans to cut US dependence to 40 pct

Infosys Technologies plans to cut dependence on the United States to about 40 percent from more than 60 percent now, its chief executive said, as a slowdown in the world's largest economy hits outsourcing deals.

Infosys, which got 63 percent of its revenue from the United States in the June quarter, planned to boost contribution from Europe to 40 percent from 27 percent, while other markets would account for the remaining 20 percent, CEO S. Gopalakrishnan said.

"We will continuously evolve and change," Gopalakrishnan told Reuters in an interview on Friday.
