Hinduism and Vegetarianism

Having well considered the origin of flesh-foods, and the cruelty of fettering and slaying corporeal beings, let man entirely abstain from eating flesh. - Manusmriti 5.49

While most major world religions are traceable to one particular founder, Hinduism has its beginnings in such remote antiquity that it cannot be traced to any one individual. Its roots, however, are firmly planted in the ancient Vedic texts.

Interestingly enough, the word "Hindu" is not actually found anywhere in Vedic scriptures. The term "Hindu" is vague, and even a misnomer. The term was introduced by Muslims from neighboring countries who referred to people living across the River Sindhu, a people who actually held a vast array of religious beliefs. There is no one "Hindu religion."

The original Vedic system is actually quite different from contemporary Hinduism. Both the old and the new, however, converge harmoniously in regard to vegetarianism. Here are some quotes from the Vedas:

"You must not use your God-given body for killing God`s creatures, whether they are human, animal or whatever." (Yajur Veda, 12.32)

"By not killing any living being, one becomes fit for salvation." (Manusmriti, 6.60)

"The purchaser of flesh performs himsa (violence) by his wealth; he who eats flesh does so by enjoying its taste; the killer does himsa by actually tying and killing the animal. Thus, there are three forms of killing. He who brings flesh or sends for it, he who cuts of the limbs of an animal, and he who purchases, sells, or cooks flesh and eats it-all of these are to be considered meat-eaters." (Mahabharata, Anu. 115:40)

Cow Protection

According to India`s traditional scriptural histories, the original cow Mother Surabhi, was one of the treasures churned from the cosmic ocean, and "the five products of the cow" (pancha-gavya)-milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung-were considered purifying. The cow is respected in her own right as one of the seven mothers because she offers her milk as does one`s natural mother. The cow plays a central role in the Vedic ideal for humanity: "simple living and high thinking," a life close to nature and God. Until recently in India`s history, most people lived on tracts of land suitable for complete self-sufficiency.

The cow thus has always played an important role in India`s economy. For example, cow dung serves as an inexpensive fertilizer. Stored in underground tanks, it also generates methane gas that is used for heating and cooking. Cow dung is also an effective disinfectant and is used both as a poultice and a cleansing agent.

The very name for the cows is aghnaya which means "not to be killed."

Vegetarianism and Nonviolence

In the Manusmriti, it is stated that one should refrain from eating all kinds of meat, for such eating involves killing and leads to karmic bondage (bandha).

Elsewhere in the Vedas, the last of the great Vedic Kings, Maharaja Pariksit, is quoted as saying that "only the animal killer cannot relish the message of the Absolute Truth." Therefore, the Vedas inform us to obtain spiritual knowledge, one must begin with being vegetarian.

The Lord`s Mercy

According to the Vedic scriptures, one should offer all foods as a sacrifice to God: "…all that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away, as well as all austerities that you may perform, should be done as an offering unto Me." (Bhagavad-gita 9.27)

The Gita also clarifies exactly what should be offered: "If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it." (Bhagavad-gita. 9.26)

Just bcoz some other community is indulging in fundamental and radical hooliganism to show their power does not justify that at peace loving Hindu community too indulge in the same acts. I don`t understand your reasoning on this issue? In that case what is the difference between Hindus and the so called fundamentalists who are hell bent on cutting accross the social fabric in India and destroy peace and harmony?? If all caste people`s thinking is in your way, then there will be daily blood bath throughout the country! Kindly do not propogate such views

Cheers!!...

morningstar,

As I said earlier justification is one thing, understanding is another. Why do u get agitated on a mere discussion on this board? Why coward guests butt in and use any and all language? Why why ? REACTION. Every action has a reaction . sometimes more sometimes less, sometimes equivalent.

Dont contradict urself in the same write up.....

though highly educated, young, and having a bright life are not the least remorse to what they have done

Only the poor, downtrodden, and peasants are used for such activities!!

So those criteria no longer apply irrespective of communities. Even the educated and the wise will react when things go too far.

You say there is the law of the land if there is conversion. Yes so go ahead and convert muslims and when u are beheaded ask the law to take its course. Why such love for the downtrodden among hindus only? Why not share the sweet faith and the rosary and the cross and the cake with the downtrodden among the muslims too with full faith that they will let the law take care of those conversions. For that matter u urself can lead the way in the venture without waiting for ur fanatical and sly men of god to show their sly ways.

And if u come out of it whole and soul then we can discuss things afresh in a cordial atmosphere and maybe I will myself offer to be converted of my own free will. Want to give it a try?cheers to u on ur venture.

MERA BHARATH MAHAN

"In religion, India is the only millionaire .... The One land that all men desire to see and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for all the shows of all the rest of the globe combined". - Mark Twain

Hu Shih, a former Ambassador of China to USA said: "India conquered and dominated China culturally for twenty centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border. This cultural conquest was never imposed by India on her neighbors. It was all the result of voluntary searching, voluntary learning, voluntary pilgrimage and voluntary acceptance on the part of China."

Will Durant, prominent American historian and philosopher said: "India was the mother of our race and Sanskrit the mother of Europe`s languages. She was the mother of our philosophy, mother through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics, mother through Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity, mother through village communities of self government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all."

"India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, grandmother of legend, and great grand mother of tradition. our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only." -Mark Twain

French scholar Romain Rolland said: "If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India."

Prof. H. Nakamura of Japan remarked: "India is culturally the Mother of Japan. For centuries it has, in her own characteristic way, been exercising her influence on the thought and culture of Japan."

The youngest Nobel Laureate Prof. Brian David Josephson said: "The Vedanta and the Sankhya hold the key to the laws of mind and thought process which are co-related to the Quantum Field, i.e. the operation and distribution of particles at atomic and molecular levels."

American Philosopher Henry David Thoreau said: "What extracts from the Vedas I have read fall on me like the light of a higher and purer luminary which describes a loftier course through a purer stratum - free from particulars, simple, universal."

Muslim scholar Al Idrishi said "The Hindus are by nature inclined to justice and never depart from it in their actions. Their good faith, honesty, faithfulness to their promises are well known and they are famous for these qualities that people flock their country from every side."

Thus Arnold Toyenbee, thinker and historian said: "Today we are still living in a transitional chapter of the world`s history, but it is already becoming clear that a chapter which had a Western beginning will have to have an Indian ending if it is not to end in the self-destruction of the race."

Dear sambala,

It is a great piece of writing. I don`t know how I missed it for a week. I just saw it.

If `Hinduism` is not mentioned anywhere in the vedas and sastras and if this identity has been created by muslims in the latter stages of history, before they captured power in India, it is a new piece of knowledge for those who speak about hindu and hinduism. Hindustan is not frequently used as a name for India by most of us but always mentioned by muslims. This leads to separatism.

As far as India is concerned, it cannot identify to a particular name for forming any kind of culture. We have vedas but difficult to know who created it and written it. So is Sastras. When we look into Gita, it is like a university, still finding meanings and explanations by different people. Then the Ramayanas. Several people created it at different times. Nobody can take credit for it.
But we have our own way of identification. The way of conflicting views and fighting for each of them. Emotional we all are and not intelligent people.

Patience is something which we have to find out where it comes from.
When we watch the tv channels, we feel that it is for a place to fight. And the fighters are called to be great intelligentia. They catch a word and fight for it till the end without reaching anywhere.
They are trying to teach us that we are really fools.

India is now not a united country. It is being tormented to be treated as states (powerful than the country itself) and regions within the states and zones again within the regions and so and so.
The it is devided into caste domination. Are we heading for total collapse?

I took birth in Kerala (and as called as a malayali). I married a girl from Karnataka (she is called as a kannadiga). We adopted Hindi and our children`s mother toungue is hindi. Where ever we go we cannot specifically identify as related to a particular region. That I treat it as a great value but we are not counted anywhere.
And that is India we have today.

Dear eashwar
1) Let us first realize that the word Hindu is not mentioned anywhere in the vedas or the scriptures. This was a term that had geographical connotations.
Yes, Hinduism is a tolerant religion, infact its so tolerant that anything goes. Its like water, it can take the shape of any vessel into which it is poured.
IMHO, this extreme malleability is also the greatest weakness. The line between right and wrong is blurred. Everything is right and nothing is wrong. It is this malleability that lead to the rise of 33crore gods and all sorts of social evils like caste system and Sati.
The vedas are a the source of your religion. It is incumbent upon every hindu to read, understand and follow it.

2) Muslims are instructed to turn towards the kaabah during the prayer. It serves as a common direction for all Muslims during the prayer. Other than serving as a directional reference, we dont pray to the kaabah. We pray to Allah - the one and only God by facing the kabah.
Its a very ordinary brick construction.
The fact that Muslims don`t worship the kaabah is very evident from the that during the prophets times, people used to stand on the kabah to announce the prayers.

3) Most hindus that i talk to say that they believe in the concept of one God. But in reality, the very fact that we have 33crore gods and so many different kinds of gods in various shapes of forms imply that most of my friends are only paying lip service to this one god concept. Let me quote the example that i gave to Radhika_nandlal.
Let us put ourselves for a microsecond in God`s shoes. How would you feel if your children starting calling your neighbor as `daddy`.

The vedas prohibit idol worship and yet we have 33 crore Gods , let me ask you , who is immature , god or us ?
How can a human being convince himself to worship something that he has created with his own hands ? Where is the logic ?What good or harm can come from an article made from Stone, or wood ?

Hi Guest,
Your point

"what will happen to the Hindus all over the world if the christens behave in the same way ,"

Read the Indian history
The Cristian govt ruled India,Brits,Portuguese,French, etc etc
We all know the atrocities committed here
When used to this in their own country,it will not going to surprise
any
India is a country gave shelter to many refugees
When Religions starts converting others by lure of favors and distributing obscene pamphlets, killing sadhus

Then the hardcore take over
One religious blind try to convert the other who has at least one eye left

If you feel you are convinced about your views, sure you can

What made Hindus angry in Karnataka

François GautierFirst Published : 06 Oct 2008 02:12:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 06 Oct 2008 07:40:54 AM ISTI WAS born in a Catholic family. My uncle was a priest, a wonderful man of warmth and compassion and I spent most my early years in Catholic boarding schools. When I was young I wanted to become a missionary and to ‘convert’ pagans in Asia. What I was taught by priests was that Hindus worship false gods and they needed to be brought back to the True Word by Jesus Christ.

Then of course, I came to India and discovered that actually Hindus, far from being the heathens, as had been portrayed in Europe, not only believed God’s diversity, the wonderful concept of avatar, but had given refuge to all persecuted minorities of the world, whether the Syrian Christians, the Parsis, the Jews (India is the only country in the world where Jews were not persecuted), the Armenians, or today the Tibetans.

I am also aghast at the one-sided coverage by the Indian media of the Christian- Hindu problem: blasts after blasts have killed hundreds of innocent Hindus in Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai train blasts, Jaipur, etc. Yet, neither Manmohan Singh nor Sonia Gandhi have pronounced once the word ‘Islamic terrorism.’ But when furious Hindus, tired of being made fun of, of witnessing their brothers and sisters converted by financials traps, of seeing a 84-year-old swami and his Mataji brutally murdered, of reading blasphemy about their Gods, vent their anger against churches, many of them makeshifts, the Indian government goes after the soft target which the Hindus are. The same thing applies to the United States: they never warned Muslim organisations in India about the killing of Hindus, but when dollars are used to buy new converts and it angers the majority community of India,Washington has the arrogance to issue a warning, and Manmohan Singh does not have the pride to tell the US to mind its own business.

Neither the Indian press nor the western correspondents bothered to write about what made Hindus angry in Karnataka: Newlife, one important westernfunded missionary centre ( http://www.newlifevoice.org), began making conversions in and around Mangalore by accosting poor people in market areas, or in bus stands, befriending them and then taking them to churches to introduce them to the father.

Upon introduction they were paid Rs 2,500 per person and then taken to the Velankanni shrine, in Tamil Nadu, where they would get another Rs. 3,000.

When they finally converted to Christianity by changing the name, they got an incentive of Rs 10,000 onwards.

Newlife would then give them instructions to abandon wearing tilak on forehead, not to visit and offer prayers at the Hindu temples, replacing the photos and idols of Hindu gods and goddesses with a Cross, etc.

But what really angered local Hindus was when Newlife went one step further and published a book in Kannada — Satya Darshini — which was widely distributed by its missionaries. Here below is the translation of some of the most abusive passages: “Urvashi — the daughter of Lord Vishnu — is a prostitute.

Vashistha is the son of this prostitute.

He in turn married his own Mother. Such a degraded person is the Guru of the Hindu God Rama. (page 48).

When Krishna himself is wallowing in darkness of hell, how can he enlighten others? Since Krishna himself is a shady character, there is a need for us to liberate his misled followers (page 50). It was Brahma himself who kidnapped Sita.

“Since Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were themselves victims of lust, it is a sin to consider them as Gods. (page 39).

When the Trinity of Hinduism (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) are consumed by lust and anger, how can they liberate others? The projection of them as Gods is nothing but a joke. (page 39). God, please liberate the sinful people of India who are worshipping False Gods. (Page 39).” When blasphemy and much worse is brought against the most sacred Hindu Gods, Hindus are supposed to take it meekly as sheep and let themselves be converted to a foreign religion! There are more than 4,000 foreign Christian missionaries involved in conversion activities across different states.

In Tripura, there were no Christians at the time of independence. There are 1,20,000 today, a 90 per cent increase since 1991. The figures are even more striking in Arunachal Pradesh, where there were only 1,710 Christians in 1961, but 1.2 million today, as well as 780 churches! In Andhra Pradesh, churches are coming up every day in far-flung villages and there was even an attempt to set up one near Tirupati.

Christians throughout the ages have strived on the concept of persecution and as a brought up Catholic, I remember feeling bad about all those martyred saints of Christianity. Christians in India like to say that they are only two per cent and can do no harm. But it is a sham: in the Tamil Nadu coastal

12 Oct 2008 19:50

Nagaland in India tops the list with 90% christians and next comes Mizoram with 87% christians to the total population. Meghalaya has 71% ,Manipur has 35% and Arunachal 19% christian population. With these the missionaries have succeeded to a large extent in caputuring the entire north eastern region. But because of great Hindu saints like Vivekanand and Ramkrishna Paramahamsa the nearer state West bengal soil do not see any significant conversion and the state has only 0.64% christian population.
And the other two states which have significant christian population are Goa 27% and Andaman Nicobar 22%....

Hi Ramki,
You are very right
it is time to buy selectively on dips
The problem is many wants to have quick return and gamble
As far as India we need to look at forest just not the trees
We are basically domestic consumption story
The only risk is a big war Globally or in the subcontinent

Hey venkat_c

Sorry to say this....I am in stock market for nearly 10 years and I have seen bear market atleast twice...... That`s the reason I never do short term trade as short term trade are always vulnerable to this volatality...... Even in this situation I firmly believe we can buy at present levels for long term gains say 3 years......Thanks and Rgds

(8)If there is anybody in the world who mastered the art of Public Relations (PR), it is the Western Church. They remain unscathed irrespective of the magnitude of crimes and genocides they commit. Their public relations engine works throughout the day. Due to their PR campaigns many people develop a larger than life view of missionaries and fall prey to their nefarious activities.
(9)
Evangelicals form political groups or atleast a pressure group. Sensing the power of such groups that too the ones supported by western powers many more people convert into Christianity for their personal and political gains. South Korea is a text book for this practice.
(10)Give me the music of a nation, and I will change the mind of that nation. said Plato.
Almost everybody in the world appreciates some form of music. Evangelicals are very successful in `Music Evangelism` wherein they lure population by offering free guitar lessons and training in western dance and music in return for conversion. High-school and college going youth are particularly vulnerable to this strategy.
(11)Miracles:
"Come to church and get the miracle you need" is the slogan representing this traditional game. Presently the game of Miracles is very popular in third world countries and tribal regions. The primary condition for Vatican to anoint somebody a saint is `Proof of Miracles`. In poor regions a missionary asks people to write their wishes like bicycle, casette player, bullock cart on a piece of paper and put in the wish-box. A week after the Church from West with slush funds fulfils `those` miracles. Intelligensia, rational and educated in west are abandoning church partly due to such cheap games.

Conversion agencies analysis

Methods used for conversion:
(1)Toys with `The Message` are given to children as gifts. A cube is very popular among teenagers. EvangeCube -- It`s a cube the size of a softball made of eight interlocking blocks that flip and fold into the story of Jesus Christ on some sides and messages from Bible denouncing the native religion. This is very popular in Africa, Russia and Asia. In UK the school children are asked to stuff shoe boxes with a gift to be sent to some African nation. In US evangelicals clandestinely organise Pizza parties in schools
(2)Majority of the world is crazy for money & wealth. People are ready to go to any extent to acquire wealth. Church is very successful is exploiting this rage by telling people to donate (called invest) to God (i.e., their Church) and pray. Church claims that God answers their prayers by returning atleast 1000% of what people offer. When people don`t get anything in return they are told that their prayers aren`t sufficient or $10+prayer will atmost get him/her a bicycle not a Rolls-Royce. This is called the "Health and Wealth" gospel in the U.S.A. - you give the church 10 percent of your gross income, and God is obligated to miraculously provide for you. This idea is big in Mormon and Pentecostal circles, and it`s making strong inroads among Baptists and "non-denominational" evangelicals. According to these preachers, if you aren`t rich and healthy, it`s because you lack faith. Uneducated, impoverished people are willing to try anything to get a good life.
(3)This strategy helps in generating a low opinion and delinking natives from their native religions, cultures and traditions. Fredrich Max Muller, Wendy Donniger, Paul Courtright, Jeffrey Kirpal etc are examples of these. Max Muller claimed that "he will write/translate Upanishads in such a way that no Hindu would ever respect them again". Jeffrey Kirpal established an incestuous relationship between Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Vivekananda whereas Paul Courtright calls Hindu Lord Ganesha a oral-sex obsessed character.
A normal Hindu won`t call himself a `proud Hindu` after reading this literature and often becomes an object of ridicule in his society. Though many of these Scholars don`t call themselves active missionaries they successfully play part-1 of the missionary game i.e., delinking.
(4) Missionaries brought alcohol and promoted alcoholism to many tribal communities (example Polynesia/Tahiti). The leaders habituated to alcohol did everything what missionaries said losing their entire communities to christianity.
(5)Brainwashing:Conversion is a "nice" word for Brainwashing...and any study of brainwashing has to begin with a study of Christian revivalism in eighteenth century America. Apparently, Jonathan Edwards accidentally discovered the techniques during a religious crusade in 1735 in Northampton, Massachusetts. By inducing guilt and acute apprehension and by increasing the tension, the "sinners" attending his revival meetings would break down and completely submit. Technically, what Edwards was doing was creating conditions that wipe the brain slate clean so that the mind accepts new programming. He would tell those attending, "You`re a sinner! You`re destined for hell!"
(6)Many Christian employers and employers use employment to lure and many times force a non-Christian into their sect of Christianity
(7)
Communication is the key to evangelism. It is not what you say BUT `HOW YOU SAY`.
Evangelists understand this concept better than anyone else. All the missionaries are trained in Marketing and Journalism. Marketing techniques are used to push their product (Jesus=Salvation; Other religions=Hell). Journalistic techniques are used to spin their stories, manage media and create stories about non-christian religions
