Astra Microwave Products Ltd, India’s leading provider of microwave wireless communications technologies for use in defense, space, and civilian applications, announced that it has received an INR 255 million order from the Indian Meteorological Department. The order is for the supply, installation, and commissioning of remote unmanned automatic remote weather stations in 550 locations across India. Scheduled to be installed in 2009, the weather stations will feed live data via satellite to the Met Department’s central servers on a 24X7 basis.
Each automated weather station will consist of:
-- Data logging and transmission system
-- GPS receiver and transmitter
-- Antenna
-- Solar panel
-- Remote display unit
-- Sensors for temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, rainfall, soil moisture and temperature, among others.
Comment by B Malla Reddy, Managing Director, Astra Microwave Products - Featuring sensors for multiple weather variables, the stations will bring bleeding edge capability to short-term weather forecasting at the local, regional, and national level, said B Malla Reddy, Managing Director, Astra Microwave Products Limited. “Precise weather forecasting is of crucial significance to groups such as farmers, fishermen, transporters, traffic controllers, public and emergency service providers--indeed, to anyone whose profession is dependent on or affected by the weather; we see our automatic weather stations as an enabler for India at large,” said Mr Malla Reddy.

Reliance Mutual Fund bought 6.3% stake in Astra Microwave in two tranches in July at an average price of Rs 37 per share. Reliance Long-term Equity Fund acquired 28.72 lakh shares, or 5.3% equity, at Rs 36.5 on July 1. It also purchased 5.35 lakh shares, or 1%, at Rs 38 per share on July 17.
Astra Microwave's FY08 net sales stood at Rs 127.2 crore as compared to Rs 106.1 crore last year. Net profit came in at Rs 20.3 crore as against Rs 27.3 crore. Earnings per share, or EPS, stood at Rs 3.78 versus Rs 5.11.
So, why is Reliance Mutual Fund bullish on this stock?
The defence segment contributes 70%, while telecom and space segments accounted for the remainder of total revenues. Astra Microwave's order book stands at Rs 90 crore as on March 31, which is executable over 12 months. It expects to add another Rs 20 crore from the defence segment. The company expects 20% growth in net sales YoY. It also sees no equity dilution for the next two years. The stock has also correctly sharply from Rs 187.50 per share to Rs 35 per share.
But is there any concerns surrounding this stock?
The company is mainly dependent on projects driven by the government. Any delay in receivables from the government would negatively impact cash flows. The company has limited scope to cater to different sectors. It has a low promoter holding of 20.8%. Strategic Venture Fund Mauritius holds 15.5% stake....
