Ruling Pakistan People's Party chief Asif Ali Zardari was on Saturday elected Pakistan's new President, securing a landslide victory in the elections.
As PPP lawmakers and workers shouted slogans like "Jeay Bhutto" (long live Bhutto) and "Zinda hai Bibi, zinda hai" (Benazir Bhutto is alive), Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq announced that Zardari had secured 281 of the 436 votes cast by the two houses of parliament.
According to the unofficial result declared by Farooq, Zardari's rivals lagged far behind - PML-N candidate Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddique bagged 111 votes while opposition PML-Q leader Mushahid Hussain Sayed secured 34.
Ten votes were declared invalid. The electoral college for the presidential poll comprises the Senate and National Assembly, the two houses of parliament, and the four provincial assemblies. Zardari also swept polling in the assemblies of North West Frontier Province, Sindh and Balochistan.
The 53-year-old widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto secured 107 votes in the 124-member NWFP assembly. Siddiqui bagged 10 votes while Sayed got only three votes. Four votes were rejected.
In the 65-member Balochistan assembly, Zardari secured 59 votes while Siddiqui and Sayed bagged two each. In the 168-strong Sindh assembly, Zardari secured 162 votes.
Counting was still underway in the Punjab assembly, where Sharif's party commands a majority.
Each vote in the two houses of parliament has a value of one, while the weightage of votes in the provincial assemblies is calculated with a complicated formula. For example, the 107 votes polled by Zardari in the NWFP assembly will have a weightage of 56 votes.
Zardari's daughters Bakhtawar and Asifa were among those who watched the counting of votes in parliament. When the result was declared, they shouted slogans along with PPP workers while Bakhtawar waved a portrait of Benazir Bhutto.
PPP workers broke into jubilation in streets of cities like Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.
The presidential election was necessitated by the resignation last month of former President Pervez Musharraf, who stepped down to avoid impeachment by the PPP-led coalition.
A week after his resignation, the PML-N pulled out of the alliance after accusing Zardari of reneging on promises to restore judges deposed during last year's emergency and to field a non-partisan candidate for the presidential polls.

Dr.Manmohan Singh has become epitome of principally clean governance, though toeing the US line is compulsion for better relationship on the international platform. But silverlining for an immensely honest parliamentarian lies in the fact he looks certain to be nominated as congress PM for next govt as well at centre.
Remember the following lines for the overall goodness :

Rattled by the stand of the armed forces that implementation of the 6th Pay Commission for them be “withheld” till their parity with civilian and paramilitary counterparts is restored, the government has promised to look into the issue on “a fasttrack basis”
simmering anger in the armed forces against the Centre for notifying the 6th Pay Commission report has now erupted over the “raw deal” given to Lt-Colonels and their equivalent ranks in IAF (Wing Commander) and Navy (Commander), who form the “bulk” of the officer cadre in Army, Navy and IAF.
After a presentation to defence minister A K Antony by the chiefs of staff committee, the armed forces also briefed top ministry officials on Tuesday about the “extant parity”of Lt-Col rank officers being lowered by retaining them in Pay Band-3 (Rs 15,600-39 ,100), while raising similarly placed civilians and paramilitary officers to PB-4 (Rs 37,400-67,000).
“This is simply not acceptable. If the government wants it can go ahead with implementation of the pay commission for other ranks but it should not happen for officers till the anomalies are sorted out,” said a top officer.
After all, of the 54,770 officers in the 13-lakh strong armed forces, almost 19,000 are Lt-Cols . These include 11,187 in the Army, 4,216 in IAF and 3,528 in Navy.
This “big bulge” has come about due to implementation of Phase-I of the Ajai Vikram Singh (AVS) Committee report in December 2004 -- which was basically aimed at arresting “the greying profile” of operational commanders through faster promotions -- without concomitant increase in ranks in the upper echelons.-et...

Only 40% of central government staff arrears would be taxed this fiscal while the rest 60% will come under the tax net next fiscal, a finance ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday. A section of finance ministry officials, however, on condition of anonymity maintained that according to Section 15 (C) of the Income Tax Act, the total arrears would be taxable this year itself.
The clarification from the Finance Ministry came in the wake of news reports earlier that the government had decided to levy tax on the entire amount of arrears—60% of which will be paid next year—in the current fiscal itself.
For lakhs of central government employees looking forward to receiving 40% of the accumulated arrears on their increased salary next month, in time for some festive spending on Diwali and Eid, the news of the levy of tax on the entire amount of arrears came like a shock, because for most employees, the decision would have virtually wiped out almost the entire amount of 40% arrears to be paid to them this year. Senior bureaucrats were supposed to suffer the most as their tax would be topped with a surcharge of 10%, applicable on an income of Rs 10 lakh and above.
A senior finance ministry official had said the surcharge to be paid by officers of the rank of joint secretary and above ranges between Rs 24,600 and Rs 52,500. The impact would be less on the lower grades.
The government had last month announced an average increase of 21% in salaries of central government employees. The hikes, effective from January 1, 2006, would burden the exchequer by more than Rs 17,500 crore annually while the arrears alone account for more than Rs 29,000 crore.
To bring down the burden on the budget, the government had announced that the arrears would be paid in two installments, with 40% in the current year and the rest in the 2009-10 fiscal. But what the government failed to explain was that the entire arrears amount was taxable in the current fiscal.
Sources said the central staff would have got equal financial benefits in both the years had the government decided to reverse the payouts by giving 60% in the first year and the rest in the second year.
A notification issued by the department of expenditure, which is implementing the sixth central pay commission recommendations, said that “income tax as due may also be deducted and credited to the government’ ’ while making sure that it brings down the burden on the Union Budget. -et

I think, Once Reliance Industries enters in the nuclear power generation space, we would be seeing L & T and Reliance making a giant leap in this space and this will in turn bring about some worth to this sector. I think we need first of all all state electricity boards to be privatised with cap on the electricity prices on upside.
Automatically, transmission and generation ratio will get improved
