"China bans mass prayers during Ramadan in restive province

Authorities in China's Muslim-populated far northwest province of Xinjiang are seeking to prevent mass prayers and the distribution of religious material as part of a security crackdown for Ramadan, government notices said.
A series of attacks on police in the province around last month's Beijing Olympic Games left more than 20 officers and security guards dead, and at least as many attackers killed or arrested, in the biggest unrest there in years.
As the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan began, local governments this week issued orders to clamp down on security in the region and stop its ethnic Muslim Uighur population from using the holy month to foment further unrest.
"Faced with recent violent and disruptive activities by religious extremists, separatists and terrorists, we must... step up ideological education of religious leaders and followers," a notice posted on Xinjiang's Zhaosu county website said.
The county government prohibited government officials, Communist Party members, teachers and students from observing Ramadan, while warning that "any person caught forcing another to observe Ramadan" would be punished.
"We must timely warn and stop religious believers from organising and planning large scale prayer groups and prevent any large crowd incidents that could harm social stability," said a notice on the Xinhe county website.

well, I really hope that as per the scenario they address the supply situation more now,as by addressing only the demand situation you are demotivating suppliers to supply more.
If you remember cement companies in 2006-07, what happened to them?
Today many of them are thinking about whether to expand their operations or not? Large players are about to complete their expansion operations.
I am happy that RNRL has plans to enter cement sector in a big way which will ensure proper supply in coming years as they always come up with large scale and large volume plans.
Govt. should plan in such a way that supply gets encouraged and RBI doesnt have to address moderating demand situation in the country.

having the oath of secrecy. Financial markets are anxiously awaiting his
comments on his immediate agenda amid concern he could continue the hawkish
stance on interest rates and liquidity to contain inflationary pressures.
Meanwhile, Reddy, who has strong academic inclinations, indicated that he will
go back to teaching in Hyderabad.

President George W Bush is poised to punish Moscow for its invasion of Georgia by cancelling a once-celebrated deal for civilian nuclear cooperation between the US and Russia.
With relations between the two nations in a nearly Cold War-like freeze over Russia\'s actions against its neighbour last month, planning is under way at the White House for the largely symbolic move by Bush, according to senior administration officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision was not yet final.
Action could come quickly, within days at the most, and officials see no need to wait until Vice President Dick Cheney returns next Wednesday from an overseas trip that includes stops in three former Soviet republics.
Withdrawing the agreement from Capitol Hill would have little actual impact, as the deal very likely would not gain approval during Bush\'s presidency.
But taking the overt and public step of pulling it would be intended to send a message to Russia and the world that its actions in Georgia last month are not acceptable and will not go unanswered. -TOI

Snapping its four-day falling streak, the Indian rupee on Thursday gained eight paise at 44.35/36 against the US currency on dollar selling by banks amid sluggish equity markets.
In wide movements at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit fluctuated in a range of 44.55 to 44.20 during the day, after resuming steady at 44.43/44 a dollar.
The rupee had fallen by 69 paise, or 1.58 per cent, in the last four trading sessions.
Dealers said the rupee moved widely on alternate bouts of dollar buying and selling amid easing concerns over widening trade deficit as global crude oil prices stayed at around $110 a barrel.
They said foreign banks as well as the state-owned lender SBI sold dollars heavily aiding rupee to touch the intra-day high of 44.20 a dollar in afternoon trade.
The domestic currency, however, failed to hold this level as oil refiners bought dollars later in the day, they added.
In overseas market, the dollar slipped across the board ahead of a decisions on interest rate by the Bank of England and the European Central Bank.

Effect of NSG Nuclear Deal Failure on LT

WASHINGTON: The Bush administration has told the US Congress that Washington will terminate nuclear trade with India if New Delhi conducts a nuclear test, and the same assurance should be written into any Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) green signal to India, Washington's non-proliferation lobby asserted on Tuesday.
In yet another last ditch attempt to hold the Bush White House to specific commitments before Congress, and possibly torpedo the US-India Nuclear Agreement ahead of a crucial NSG meeting in Vienna on Tuesday, non-proliferation hardliners here released what they said was a 'secret' letter written by President Bush to a now deceased lawmaker in which the administration seemingly challenges New Delhi's claim that the agreement will not constrain India's right to conduct nuclear tests.
Instead, in the 26-page response to Congressional queries, the administration (and not President Bush specifically) has in effect assured the late Congressman Tom Lantos, who died of cancer in February this year, that any Indian test would compel the administration to act as per the provisions of the Hyde Act (named after the Lantos' colleague Henry Hyde, who also passed away in November last year) and cease nuclear cooperation with India.
Responding to 45 technical questions posed by members of House International Relations Committee, of which Lantos was the chairman, a senior administration official specifically addressed the contentious issue of fuel supply, which is India's bugaboo given past record of mistrust on this subject between the two countries. New Delhi has sought iron-clad guarantees that fuel supplies will not be interrupted in the event of an Indian nuclear test.
The letter says the United States would help India deal only with "disruptions in supply to India that may result through no fault of its own," such as a trade war or market disruptions. "The fuel supply assurances are not, however, meant to insulate India against the consequences of a nuclear explosive test or a violation of nonproliferation commitments," the letter said.
A minor detail that was misrepresented in the story by a runaway media is that the letter is not from President Bush, but from Jeffrey Bergner, Assistant Secretary, Legislative Affairs, in the State Department. But Congressional aides said the bureaucracy was conveying the views of the White House and the missive can be said to be from President Bush.
The letter was released by Congressman Howard Berman, who succeeded Lantos as Chairman, because "because he wants to ensure that his colleagues have all of the relevant information," Lynne Weil, the communications director of the committee told TOI.
According to the non-proliferation lobby, India has been claiming that the deal would not constrain the country's right to nuclear tests and would provide an uninterrupted supply of fuel to India's nuclear reactors. In August 2007, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Parliament," The agreement does not in any way affect India's right to undertake future nuclear tests, if it is necessary

According to the recent directives, subscribers are entitled to get full talk time on recharges and will have to pay administrative fee not exceeding Rs 2 per recharge and other applicable taxes.

To make access to various offers and tariff plans much easier to the consumer, the regulatory body has mandated that no precondition, like sending an SMS, be laid down by the operator of any explicit action by the subscriber to avail of any kind of tariff reductions
