Japan unveils `space beer`
The world`s first "space beer" cultivated from barley grown in a laboratory orbiting the earth has been unveiled.
The extra-terrestrial beverage was the result of a five-month mission during which barley was grown for the first time in a Russian laboratory on board the International Space Station (ISS).
Sapporo Breweries, one of Japan`s major breweries, went on to use the crop of barley grown in space to create 100 litres of a 5.5 per cent proof beer aptly named Space Barley.
"There`s really no beer like it because it uses 100 per cent barley. Our top seller is the Black Label brand, using additional ingredients such as rice. This one doesn`t, and is really a special beer," said Junichi Ichikawa, managing directory for strategy at Sapporo Breweries.
The space brew was the result of a collaboration between the Russian Academy of Science, Okayama University in Japan and Sapporo Breweries , one of the oldest brewers in the country.
The barley was grown as the result of an on-going crop growing project on board ISS, with other products including wheat, lettuce and peas. In the furute, potatoes could also be grown in space.
However, Boris Morukov, a cosmonaut who spent 11 days in space on board the ISS, said: "I think we would try to grow potatoes as food, not for vodka production." While the current batch of space beer will not be sold commercially, 30 couples selected from among the public by lottery will be invited to a special tasting event in Tokyo next month.
Although beer has previously been off space menus due to its alcohol and gas content, breweries are hoping that the newly-created space beer may eventually become available for astronauts to enjoy in space.
The unveiling of the space beer comes to light only days after a selection of Japanese delicacies such as seaweed soup, mackerel in miso and green tea, were blasted into space to feed astronauts on board the ISS.

2009: a beer oddity -- Sapporo counts down to space beer launch.
Beer made from barley cultured from that kept aboard the International Space Station (ISS) is ready for earthbound tipplers, Sapporo Breweries announced Tuesday.
Dubbed "Space Barley," the beer is made from barley descended from that kept at the ISS for five months in 2006.
Since the production will be limited, Sapporo Brewery will not be putting the beer on the market; but it plans to invite punters to tasting parties at the firm`s six factories across the nation during January.
The unearthly brew is one of the products of a research program by Okayama University and the Russian Academy of Sciences, using barley seeds provided by Sapporo.
About half of the 45 kilograms of third-generation barley derived from its space-kept ancestors was used to produce 100 liters of beer, which was then submitted to a battery of safety tests, including those for genetic abnormalities.
The company says it wants to apply the way barley was kept in space to the development of a new type of barley that can grow in harsher environments back on earth.
Up to 60 people, selected by lottery, will be invited to the tasting events. For more information, call the company at: 0120-500-245.

Earthlings, space beer has splashed down
Result of a five-month mission to boldly grow reaches fruition in Japan
TOKYO - Space beer, the result of a five-month mission to boldly grow, where almost no one has grown barley before, has landed in Japan.
The beverage, brewed from barley cultivated in the International Space Station in 2006, has splashed down courtesy of the Russian Academy of Science, a Japanese university and beer giant Sapporo.
But the 100 liters of the 5.5 percent alcoholic brew are not for sale, although tastings are being offered to some earthlings as Sapporo tries to push its brand into a new orbit.
"There`s really no beer like it because it uses 100 percent barley. Our top seller is the Black Label brand, using additional ingredients such as rice. This one doesn`t, and is really a special beer," Junichi Ichikawa, managing directory for strategy at Sapporo breweries, told a news conference on Tuesday.
Cosmonaut Boris Morukov, who spent 11 days in space himself, says barley joins wheat, lettuce and peas as space station produce, noting potatoes may take root in future studies, although not to make an equally famous Russian beverage.
"I think we would try to grow potatoes as food, not for vodka production," Morukov said.
Beer sales have been falling in Japan and has generally been off space menus because of its alcohol and gas content.
With explorers now eyeing longer trips to Mars, that menu may change, with Japan`s Okayama University Professor Manabu Sugimoto advising astronauts not to rule out space rice wine in future.

The jump in mortgage activity was an indication that a new Federal Reserve program to buy $500 billion of mortgage-backed securities from home-financing facilitators Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae was helping bring down home loan costs. Costs had stayed stubbornly high, impeding a recovery in the slumping U.S. housing market.
However, in another signal that U.S. employers were making do with fewer workers, non-farm productivity was slightly stronger than initially forecast in the third quarter. Still the pace of growth remained the slowest this year as output declined the most in seven years, the Labor Department said.

Private jobs and services slump show recession toll
NEW YORK: Private employers slashed an unexpectedly high 250,000 jobs in November, the biggest cut in seven years, while the service sector, which Job powers most of the economy, posted its worst slump on record.
Wednesday`s reports were the latest signs that the job market is nowhere near bottom and suggested Friday`s government payrolls report could exceed current expectations for 320,000 job losses in November.
The Institute for Supply Management said its index of non-manufacturing businesses dropped to the lowest in its 11-year history, while a record low in its employment gauge raised worries about the payrolls report.
"This is consistent with payrolls falling by about 500,000; let`s hope it is very wrong," said Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.
ADP Employer Services, a major payroll servicer for the private sector, said private companies cut jobs for a fourth straight month in November.
The ISM said its non-manufacturing index came in at 37.3, below October`s already weak 44.4.
It was well below the level of 50 that separates expansion from contraction and much worse than the median forecast of 42.0 expected in a Reuters poll of 71 economists.
This was also consistent with global trends, with the euro zone`s services economy falling deeper into recession last month than initially thought. That will add pressure on the European Central Bank to cut interest rates on Thursday by more than the 50 basis points expected.
Every major category in the ISM survey hit a record low, particularly bad news for the United States, where 80 percent of economic activity is driven by the service sector, which includes businesses such as banks, airlines, hotels and restaurants.
The data reflected the heavy constraints on the economy as the U.S. recession enters its second year, the worst financial crisis in a generation.
"The severe damage to the service industry is another indication of the extraordinary force of this recession," said Pierre Ellis, senior economist at Decision Economics in New York.
US stocks gained, but only after shaking off losses in the wake of the surprisingly weak ISM report. U.S. Treasury debt prices fell, while the dollar gained against major currencies.
NOT A RAY OF LIGHT
The ADP data was the first reading of the job market since the US economy was formally declared on Monday to have entered recession.
The 250,000 jobs reported by ADP to have been lost last month significantly exceeded the 200,000 median forecast of 24 economists polled by Reuters.
As in the ISM data, there was little in the ADP report, jointly developed with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, to spur optimism.
"It`s impossible to find any ray of light here," said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers in St. Louis.
Prakken said Wednesday`s ADP data was consistent with a drop of 300,000 or more jobs in the November payrolls report and added that employment declines of 300,000 to 500,000 were possible in the coming months.
ADP revised October`s private job cuts upward to 179,000 from the originally reported loss of 157,000.
The National Bureau of Economic Research, the official arbiter of economic cycles, said on Monday that the contraction began in December 2007.
The only positive news for the economy in Wednesday`s slew of data was that interest rates on US mortgage loans fell to an average 5.47 percent last week, the lowest in more than three years, and mortgage applications surged by a record amount.

Tata Steel introduces scheme to cut workforce
RANCHI: India`s leading steel maker Tata Steel is introducing an early separation scheme in its Jamshedpur plant in Jharkhand to downsize the workforce, officials said on Wednesday.
Employees above 50 years of age are eligible to apply for ESS. Under the scheme, an employee opting for ESS will get a consolidated amount as per the salary structure and be entitled to get pension benefits.
Tata Steel media cell head Prabhat Sharma, when contacted, told IANS that the move was routine affair. "It is a routine affair. Every year we introduce ESS," Sharma said.
However, sources close to the company management said the global economic slowdown had prompted the steel major to take such a decision as part of its cost-cutting measures.
At present, Tata Steel has 34,000 employees in the plant. Under the ESS, the company is planning to relieve around 2,100 employees.
Meanwhile, the company Tuesday announced that its consolidated net profit had gone up 213 percent to Rs.47.72 billion in the quarter ended Sep 30 this fiscal.
what a writing ?? whole year bjp and others telling govt about terrorism and laws to be imposed . tv channels like cnn and ndtv were laughing and making fun of patriotic people . manmohan singh sleeping . now u say that lkadvani not coming for meeting.? why u mislead . ever advani or others stopped govt from taking strict measures. it is govt to govern . why to consult advani . and manmohan singh mentioned that it is national shame about orissa and now he is reading from paper after so many hrs after attacks . bush immediately came to tv after 9/11 and without mincing word declared war against terrorism .
media is very irresposible. now ndtv say that we should learn now . check all footage of ndtv ... barkha , vikram all unpatriotic working for money in collabaration with american owners . always criticing and still criticising nationalist forces ,. these channels are powerful but very very dishonest. With all my respect to bombayites/corrporate world and people who dies , which channel has covered bomb blasts in assam few days back and killing so many people , are their lives meaningless , only one day talk and reporting in newspaper on third page and channels telling as passing by , no tv interviews or family of dead shown . do u understand what is happening in assam is more dangerous than what happenned in 26 sept . there is clearcut conspiracy to devide the country . masterminded by west supported by bangladeshies.so many banned organisation in mizoram and nagaland has headquaters in europe and highly porous borders of bangladesh acn make them declare separation . it is not hidddeen . it is known world over . listen to sppeches made in public in banladesh . what is missing is at our part . communists has created their gameplan to confuse , devide people on cast , popped up mayawati and now every dalit , though knowing very well that she is not upto the standard, want her somehow to be prime minster and not caring about country , who cares about assam and the country beyond that, do u think these leaders of hindi heartland , mulayam/rambilaspaswan/amarsingh even can count the states in north eastern region .
demograhic changes in assam and far east are alarming , why missionary is increasing thier money alloatment in india and particlurly far east . . why cnn and bbc is more concerned about burma. is america or uk saints , genocide done of aborigins of america and australia is known to few but ahard fact , i know my country is going to doom becuase we chose our leaders and even after division of country leaders and channels will be kept telling you that beware of divisive forces or fascist forces . , though india was devided during congress and muslim league presence and due to greed of their leaders
lots of people has been told about parveen tagodia and like but will any tv telecast what imam bukhari of jama masjid of new delhi used to give speech . i dare anybody to publish all speeches from 1984 till today made from jama masjid . home ministry must be having all tapes , people would realise then that who much disinformation campagin is being done by our leaders and media....

26-11-2008 -Mumbai- India: Some Swirling Thoughts.
Wednesday, December 03, 2008
An attack by terrorists and terrorism is not new to India. It has been happening over two decades in some part or other in this country. Every time it happened, many innocent lives were lost. There were knee-jerk reactions, emotional reactions, political bickering, and blame games and so on. The suddenness and speed at which these events happened, they were pushed into the pages of history with as much suddenness and with slightly lesser speed. The response from the public, the media, and the parties in governance was always been reactive and never proactive. The causes to these attacks, though debated and analysed, were never seriously addressed and resolved
This lackadaisical approach to this contentious issue has been well gauged by the terrorists and prompted them to be more adventurous in their audacious, astonishing and dastardly attacks they carried out in MUMBAI CITY on the night of Wednesday, 26th November, 2008. For the first time, the terrorists chose the Arabian Sea route to land on the shores of Mumbai. Fanning out in batches, they began gunning down innocent civilians as they targeted crowded historic rail terminus- Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus- using sophisticated weapons, firing indiscriminately. they threw hand grenades at will at different places in the city, hijacked a police jeep after killing three top police officers, before seizing Luxury hotels- The Taj, The Oberoi, and The Trident- and a Jewish Centre in Nariman House all located in South Mumbai. They held hostages at these landmarks, some of whom were killed, some rescued later.
The siege lasted close to sixty hours at these locations before the commandos of National Security Guards shot all but one who was captured alive.
This cowardly, heinous act ended with around 190 getting killed, including foreigners, and around 350 getting injured. The style and magnitude at which these attacks were executed with precise planning left the entire nation shocked, stunned and bemused. It was unprecedented.
The nation was in agony, anguish, and livid with incessant anger. The public in Mumbai, who were at the receiving end of these multiple attacks, lead the nation’s outrage with a spontaneity that belied its proud trait of tolerance. In one voice, the nation blamed the politicians for the insecurity of their lives; for their irresponsibility; for their unaccountability; and above all for being soft in dealing with terrorism.
The nation demanded ACTION and NOT WORDS OR SPEECHES.
Such public outrage was unprecedented and remarkable for its unified voice.
Stung by this public outcry, hyped and fanned by the electronic media, the home minister of the country- Mr. Shivraj Patil submitted his resignation owning MORAL responsibility. He was targeted for his inefficient and ineffective leadership for the terror attacks during his tenure. The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra too stepped down owning the same MORAL responsibility, after initial reluctance!! The Chief Minister has been asked by his Party - The Congress Party- to continue till a suitable leader is chosen, paving the way for indulging in a mini power game. Such is the insensitivity of the politicians to serious issues.
Peeved at the criticism of this outrage directed at their breed, the narrow minded politicians of Congress, the BJP and others retorted with caustic comments, inflaming the atmosphere further disowning individual responsibility, and instead blamed the failure of multiple agencies involved in looking after the security of the country.
Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh Convened a high level all party meeting, to which the main opposition BJP party leader, Mr.L.K.Advani chose NOT to attend, as he was busy in election campaign!! At the meeting a decision was taken to set up a new outfit- Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) to deal exclusively with intelligent network to combat terrorism. Measures would be taken to strengthen all institutions and agencies for the security of the country.
Initial investigations and interrogations of the lone arrested terrorist reveal the involvement of Pakistan, and the terror outfits operating from that country as in all such attacks. Pakistan has always denied its involvement despite evidence pointing to its complicity.
America and Britain have offered help in investigations, and their intelligence officers are already in India. US secretary of State Ms Condoleezza Rice has appealed to Pakistan to co-operate. That remains to be seen.
But for the Commendable action of the National Security Guard (NSG) Commandos, in coordination with the Army, the Rapid Action Force, the security forces, the Mumbai Police, and the Mumbai fire brigade, the causalities would have been much more.
(This is part one; Part two continues)

It`s named as SPG - Special Protection Group.
All the politicians who r enjoying the services of PSG commandos r by default getting this SPG cover also under Z or Z+ category. Whatever the category is I don`t care. I know only one thing these parasites r making their life secure & exposing to all of us for threat to our life.

The diversion of PSG/NSG from their designated duties to the security of Nethas is just like the misappropriation of government money.I wonder why the Comptroller and audit general did not point out this misappropriation as he is doing in such other instances.Govt. money and the expert training given to PSG/NSG is being wasted by deploying them to duties other than originally intended.Further the association of these forces and their proximity to some of the criminal minded politicians will demoralise their spirits and there is a chance that some of the personell of this elite force may follow the traits of their masters. It would be a sad event if it happens.
In case the politicians require security Government may raise a separate force for that purpose.PSG/NSG should always be kept alert and their concentration should not be disturbed.I think Govt. will think about this seriously in view of so many protests raised in this forum in this regard.

Dear Rose, What should all of us say about our politicians?
The less we talk about these nonsensitive people, it`s better for ourselves. I`m not sure if BHAGWAN/GOD/ALLAH/WAHEGURU is doing something or it`s mere conincidence that after the Mumbai Attack, all of sudden Politicians across party lines r putting their foot in mouth.
Sample this -
Congress - Vilas Rao - What a big issue if my son & RGV r visiting TAJ Hotal as tourist.
NCP - R R Patil - These smal incidents do happen in a big city like Mumbai
BJP - Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi - Some 10-15 women wearing Jeans & tops with Lipstick & powder on their face, what they want to prove? It`s a conspiracy against Democracy.
& Finnaly
Communist - V S Achutanandan - (I`m not going to produce those rubbish words here again to disturb the soul of our MARTYR - Sandeep)
Already the anger against politicians was on a high during & after MUMBAI attack & all of sudden these politicians - - - - - -
may be BHAGWAN also wants to teach a lesson to all these politicians.
Thanks
